Meet Dr. Sara Smith
Dr. Sara Smith was born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. With an enthusiasm for learning and love of animals, she knew she wanted to become a veterinarian at a young age.
Dr. Smith attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 2009 followed by a Master of Science degree in Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences in 2011. She then went onto North Carolina State University to earn her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2015. With a desire to further specialize and a passion for veterinary ophthalmology, Dr. Smith completed a one-year small animal surgical and medical internship at Colorado State University in 2016. She then returned to North Carolina State University for an ophthalmology research fellowship. To achieve her training as a specialist in veterinary ophthalmology, Dr. Smith completed a three-year comparative ophthalmology residency in early 2020 at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2021, she became board certified as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO).
During her ophthalmology training, Dr. Smith performed clinical research studies on improving techniques for diagnosing tear film disorders in dogs and enhancing topical drug delivery with her work published in various peer-reviewed literature. She is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA).
During her veterinary internship at Colorado State University in 2015, Dr. Smith fell in love with the Rocky Mountains and is excited to be back in Colorado. Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Smith enjoys hiking, skiing, running, and swimming. As an undergraduate at Virginia Tech, she was a student-athlete as a member of the Division I Swimming and Diving Team, therefore she always likes to stay active!
