Dr. Martha Julien's pictureMeet Dr. Martha Julien

Dr. Martha Julien grew up on a mixed-stock farm in Omaha, Nebraska. She developed a love for veterinary medicine at a young age while working alongside her veterinarian father, managing the responsibilities that come with raising horses, cows, sheep, and poultry. Growing up, Dr. Julien enjoyed participating in 4-H and showing sheep at regional state fairs. One of her passions was competing in the American Quarter Horse Youth Association (AQHYA) all-around circuit until college.

Dr. Julien obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Geosciences from Boston College in 2012 and subsequently graduated from veterinary school with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (MVB) from University College Dublin in 2018. She went on to complete a one-year small animal medicine and surgery internship at BluePearl Pet Hospital in Tampa, Florida in 2019. Dr. Julien continued her training with an ophthalmology specialty internship at the Toronto Animal Eye Clinic in Ontario that she completed in 2020. She then underwent a three-year comparative ophthalmology residency at Texas A&M University that finished the summer of 2024 (Gig ‘Em!). During her residency, Dr. Julien enjoyed working with companion animals, horses, and food animals. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and has a keen interest in teaching interns and students.

Dr. Julien has published clinical research studies in peer-reviewed journals on procedural efficacy of end-stage glaucoma intervention in dogs, and the relation of changes within the ocular microbiome and infectious ulcerative keratitis in horses. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) as well as the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA).

Dr. Julien loves surgery and her two cats, Effie and Alfred. In her spare time, she enjoys staying active; playing tennis, running or skiing. Pursuing her dream of veterinary ophthalmology has taken her across the globe. She loves adventure, whether it be scuba diving or skydiving. She’s excited to start exploring Colorado and is looking forward to joining the Eye Specialists for Animals team!
